Working out can be repetitive and down right boring. Aerial yoga provides a great alternative.

Aerial Yoga is yoga done while using a soft fabric hammock that hangs from the ceiling. These hammocks are like a scarf made of super strong nylon that can support over 2,000 pounds and are adjustable.

Throughout the yoga class, you do various traditional yoga poses that are aerial yoga adapted using the hammock for extra stretch.

Some of the most basic poses involve simple stretches while seated on the hammock, while other poses progress to hanging upside down and grabbing your thighs, ankles or feet for support and balance.

Generally proponents of Aerial Yoga say that it allows for greater flexibility than traditional yoga. It is also said to force you to concentrate more thus promoting better focus because the maneuvers are more challenging.

It’s a better core workout because the balance that is required strengthens your core muscles.

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to take an aerial yoga class at Kaya Wellness Yoga in Philadelphia. Kaya is the only studio in the city of brotherly love that provides this unique yoga experience. The techniques help with breathing, the bodies flexibility, and releasing toxins. My class was with the new studio’s owner and instructor, Leyna. It was very intimate, with just a few students. Once you get over the fact that you’re body is dangling in mid-air, aerial yoga becomes very relaxing, therapeutic and very fun.
